As long as the residual gasket is thin, I would think that you could forget about depending on a new gasket to seal it. Instead use a bead of RTV Ultra black.

Dielectric grease on battery terminals is great. That grease in connector clips tends to collect a lot of dust and dirt when you have 2.5 miles of dirt road to access pavement.

Very true. Also, strange things can happen with a worn-out exhaust baffle. It can be an rpm range trouble.
