installing a kick starter

Can a kick starter be installed on an 81H? I'm assuming so, as it says kick starter on the side case even though it doesn't have one, what all is involved, and what specific bikes do the parts need to be sourced from? Thanks.

Personally, I prefer the electric start, but I think it would make an nice additional piece of back up equipment if not too costly to do.

The 81 motor IIRC is missing a gear that will require splitting the cases for it's installation.

If you look here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36652 you can see how much of the mechanism you may have. If yours looks like the last pic you'll have to split the cases.

The missing bits will have to be sourced from a '78-79 XS11.

Well, it was more curiosity than anything else, I'll pass on case splitting, especially since it would have been for emergency use anyway, I'll just find a hill if it comes to that.

Hopefully, you'll already be near the top of that hill or else it's gonna be a b**ch to push it up the hill!
Another option is to have a set of small jumper cables stashed on the bike, like in a saddlebag or fairing.

Thing is though, the kick starter will not start the bike if it has a flat battery. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having a kick starter, IMO. I had one on my XS1100 and never once used it. Personally, I wouldn't bother fitting one...... And certainly not if it means splitting the cases!!

Yea. It does seem to not work on a dead battery. I tried in vain for 10 mins, Notta..... After charging the battery, good as good, 1-2 kicks.

BUT if you want theft deterrence, you could disconnect the wires for your starter, and take your kickstart with ya.

Not that I think stealing is ok, but props to anyone that can push a dead xs11 around.

Ha ha ha, great first post, welcome aboard, to hell with the kick starter, but as long as I keep kicking, everything will be all right!
