I originally put this in parts wanted section, but I thought that maybe more people would notice it if I put it in this section too. Hope that's ok.

Hi All, It's been awhile since I posted, but I have been checking through the site off and on. Needed to clean the carbs and I broke a post, of course now is when I found the posting for the pin removal tool and the carb post repair. But I'd rather have a different rebuildable carb if possible.
I'm in need of a #1 carb for my 1981 XS 1100 Special, the local bone yard is trying to look for one for me on some of the bikes back in their hinter lands on or about tuesday, but I thought I might be better off asking for some help here.

Golden carbs

I guess I just found out what everybody already knew. " There's GOLD in them thar carbs." lol. yeah I'll keep looking but I'm going to do the repair in the mean time. I do have a 79 special in the shed that was going to be a project. But I wonder will the bank of carbs from that work for my 81 if they were rebuilt and synced up, also with the mikuni carbs if they're the right #s does it matter if they came from say a suzuki? Seems to me they would be ok except for maybe the jets and such. Did yamaha use the same carbs on other models say 750's or 850's? Do you know how to tell what the mm of the carbs are?

The 79s will work just fine. Members here will say tuning is actually easier and more accurate in 78/79 carbs.

oh good, a few day's ago I thought things looked bleak. Now I've got option's. I looked at the video for the carb post it was good. Then I got caught up on the tranny fix vid, I know that we have the tranny fix on the site here but having that and the vid add's another level of confidence for me. In the video he just seemed to swap out gear's from another tranny. Won't those gears have the same problem in the future? Is the dremel the best way to make a permenent fix? Can new gear's be bought that won,t end with the same problem? :)

iirc later in the series he comes to that same conclusion and does the dremel fix

When I've swapped gears in the trans, I ALWAYS do at least a little work on the dogs. IF you start with gears in good condition, it's a LOT easier and faster cause your only back-cutting a little, not trying to repair and back-cut for badly worn dogs.

yeah, I think 2nd gear has taken some abuse at times. "OH Wait" that's probably why I need the fix. I'm hoping to do that this winter. First I gotta make a shed into a work space.;)

Dremeling will help a lot but the greatest thing is that ALONG with the washer swap. With the extra contact on the dogs I've heard of no one having the 2nd gear issue again.

Really good to know. I forgot to mention that I was able to fix my carb post. It broke off a little more than third of the way down, so I filed both broken ends down and drilled both ends. then I cut the head off a stainless screw and locktited it into the top piece and then screwed that into the bottom post with more locktite and because of the filing I was able to turn it down to the perfect height and use the original mounting holes for the floats. when i got done you had to look close to see that it was ever broke. Back in the bike and running great. Also I didn't remove the carb from the rack . I taped every thing up in plastic except for the post to be drilled. So I didn't have to resync the carbs. I realized to late that I should have taken a pic to post. Thanks to all for your input.
