evaporust and gas tanks.

Here's my experience cleaning two rusted tanks with evaporust. It works great. First you can leave the petcocks in, as it will not damage the aluminum or pot metal or the rubber. It will not damage...

I am looking for the "special washer" that holds down the back of the gas tank on a 1980 xs 850 special. The part # is 3J2-24186-00-00. I also need the rubber damper that...

Hi Roger,
I am using the Motion Pro push pull cable as well. I seem to recall that I got the instructions online from Motion Pro. I looked at my bike today to see how I had hooked them...

I replaced my springs last year. They are made by Kibblewhite Engineering, and are available from Dynoman.net.

Hi, I'm up in Canada near Blaine WA. I'd be interested in coming along next summer. The Puget Sound area sounds good.

clutch problem

Hi, is this a new bike you have just acquired? If it has been sitting for several years the clutch plates sort of get stuck together. If you can get it rolling down a hill or get pushed fast enough...

Hi, Partsnmore has them in black. If you wanted to polish them to aluminum it shouldn't be too hard to do. I think they were about $70.

mileage

Hi, most of my driving is on the highway, usually at about 80 mph, with no fairing, so lots of wind drag. So the engine is under a pretty good load most of the time. I don't think the vacuum advance...

pre ignition knock

Hi, I too had this knocking problem. I disconnected the vacuum advance entirely. This is not a performance enhancing piece of equipment, it is only used to advance ignition timing at low engine loads...

compression

Hi Dan,
My 1980 with the 1197 kit in it, and 1978 cams, has 160 PSI across the board. The head was cut slightly just to make sure it was flat, but only about .002 or so.

valve guides.

Hi there, 1200 miles per quart of oil? I would not bother trying to fix that until it gets much worse. Down to 200 miles per quart. It is a fairly involved job, for not a lot of gain, I mean 1200...

Dynoman.net sells replacement Keihin carbs for around $800 for the CR33 model. Realistically, it will cost you about $400 to totally rebuild your old carbs, with lots of your time wasted trying to...

I finally got the bike together, and put plates on it. Well, I have to say it runs great, lots more power. How much of it is due to the bore kit I can't say. I am running 1978 cams, Keihin cr33...

keihin carbs

Hi, I have a set or the keihin cr carbs on my XS1197. They come in 33 or 36 mm sizes. I chose the 33mm size for street use. I have absolutely no regrets. The bike starts instantly, all the time. Have...

Your front end swap looks great. I may consider doing this myself. Did the triple tree bolt right up to the steering head, or were some modifications required?

Oxalic acid is a great rust stain remover. The downside is that it releases a low level of cyanide gas while it is working on the rust. So best done outside only.
