I'd be careful cutting on the dog ears. I think that they may have a nitrated coating on them to make them harder / stronger. I could be wrong.

Look at the wiring diagram for the flasher and then the bike. On my XS I had to reverse 2 wires in the flasher plug to get mine to work. Not sure on the XJ.

You could use the linked system off of an early Yamaha Venture Royal. They are linked rear pedal to the rear caliper and 1 front caliper.
