Archaeological evidence of the fabled Midnight Maxim?
Hey Folks,
Just bought two huge boxes of side covers and other body parts from my local, long established, bike shop. And amongst the relics, what pops up!! A side cover with an emblem reading "Midnight Maxim". I told my friends about the discussion and even skepticism of the existence of the Midnight Maxim 1100. They looked at each other and laughed, and both assured me they had worked on one of these for many years. So, here it is, a bone picked from the darkest, deepest digs of a 30+ year established neighborhood bike shop. Unfortunately, the gold finish on the trim ring is corroding and lifting off the backing. The first pic is the cover, the second one is next to the identical cover from my XJ. This is to compare them for size purposes. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/P4150247.jpg ![]() http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/P4150246.jpg ![]() Don't know why they won't post but just follow the link to see them. Pretty cool!! Feedback requested. I'll post more pics for other side covers in the "parts for other bikes" section. I have a matching set for an XS400 and others. **Cobia, you need to click/use the IMAGE button, not the URL/LINK button to insert an image! TC **

Being the detail oriented engineering type, I can't help but notive the two covers are far from identical in shape and or mounting methods from what I see. I know there were XJ650 and or 700/750 Midnight Maxims. Perhaps that is the source of this relic and your shop buddies memories??

Just top be clear...there were many Midnight Maxim bikes, only none of them based on the XJ. There were a number of Midnight Maxims in displacments smaller than 1100cc as well as the XS11-spawned Midnights. I am not convinced...I am sure the mechanics worked on Midnights, but not an XJ midnight. Ask them if they remember a Midnight with an LCD instrument pod and YICS.

Cobia...
I tend to agree w/ Jerry... plus, that black plastic bottom tab is on the wrong side as well. XJ1100J Maxim's had one, but it's on the LH side... to cover the battery.... Say, get w/ me if you're interested in learning how you might score a FREE repro set of those... PM me. Interesting find, but I bet they're off of a smaller Maxim... Bob

Nope, those aren't off of an 1100. Totally different size and shape. Well.. besides both are triangle-ish.. lol.
The legend continues... Tod

I might add.. the one on the left, (The burgundy one) is off of an 1100. Notice the different shapes and sizes.

I have a conspiracy theory involving Bigfoot riding one but that doesnt mean it couldnt happen .
