The Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group's founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group's plan "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."

It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said "God sent the shooter."

Not surprisingly, the group's announcement was met with resistance online. A Change.org petition asking for Connecticut officials to prevent the group from protesting has been launched, and users of the social news and link sharing site Reddit have been discussing ways to stage a counter-protest.

A Facebook event that calls for "counter-activity" to "keep any hatred from touching" the grieving families has over 10,000 attendees, but because of a bomb threat in Newtown on Sunday, the event has been cancelled.

Anonymous, the loosely affiliated group of Internet "hacktivists," said that it had hacked the group's website and released personal information about the group's members, according to The Inquisitr.


The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the Westboro Baptist Church "arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America," while the Anti-Defamation League calls it "a small virulently homophobic, anti-Semitic hate group."

In 2011, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church, saying that the right to picket funerals was protected under the First Amendment. President Obama earlier this year, however, signed legislation that said that protests must be held 300 feet from military funerals.

I understand that someone could possibly indoctrinate a family into believing that crap, but a whole church?? How can that many people be mentally screwed up that bad. How can they live with themselves, or sleep at night, and each family can't have friends among their neighbors and the people at their work. What a lonely horrible existence. I wonder if they wake up in the morning and say "Ah, hate, hate, hate, isn't it wonderful. Who shall I hate the most today??? Maybe a teacher, or Principal, or a kindergarden kid, or a gay person, or a Jew, or a soldier." How many times has each one of us said I don't like that person, but I wouldn't want them to die like that! But they do!! And in my bitter monents I would like those hatemongers to die badly. I am sorry if I have affended anyone, I just started typing and it got away from me and out it came.

I have been to Sandyhook,CT.several times,the town is a clean friendly new england town. If this can happen there,it can happen anywhere.Very sad,but if they show up there with all the emotions going on,it very well could be a mistake,very close to the city of N.Y.,and they are not so kind down there to scumbags like them.I haven't heard anything about them being in town,but I am quite sure,people between CT. and N.Y. will do what is needed to protect the families of though's affected.I for one,would love to kick though's scumbag a$$'$.

The hacker group Anonymous has taken aim at the Westboro Baptist Church which we all know is the hate mongering group that protests military funerals and the like because they think that it is God’s judgement being served. They recently announced that they were going to picket the school in CT where the shooting took place. During the attack they were praising the death toll numbers coming in.

Anonymous saw this and decided enough is enough. Here is their message that was transmitted prior to them hacking and bringing down everything associated with the church. They also got their hands on all of the members’ personal info and posted it on the web. Read below and enjoy. This gave me chills.

As you may not have acknowledged our existence, we, on the other hand, have recognized yours. We have seen your depraved methods of disseminating your message of hate throughout The United States of America. We have witnessed you defaming the memories of those who sacrificed themselves for the security of our nation, disrupting the peace of the educational environment within high schools and universities, breeding hatred within the fragile minds of your own next of kin, desecrating the name of God by protesting in the proximity of churches and synagogues, and mangling the biblical text to conform in accordance with your malevolent cause.

Your pseudo-faith is abhorrent, and your leaders, repugnant. Your impact and cause is hazardous to the lives of millions and you fail to see the wrong in promoting the deaths of innocent people. Well now isn't that interesting. I hope it is true and I also hope it works. I ask you, who can the church call to investigate any harassment of them. According to the lady in the picture in BA80's message, they want the cops dead, so who will help them?? Their hate has come around to bite them in the butt. They have alienated everyone that could help them in bad times. And they deserve whatever Anonymous does to them.

fter Westboro Baptist Church announced their plans to demonstrate at funerals and vigils of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims, where 20 children between the ages of 6-7 were viciously gunned down, the hacker group known as Anonymous is back on the offensive.

Anonymous, a Robin-Hood-like group of ‘hactivists’ that has been working for almost a decade to ensure freedom of speech on the Internet, doesn’t like it when groups such as WBC abuse that freedom elsewhere.





According to Computer World, the animosity between Anonymous and WBC began in January 2011, when a letter was sent to WBC claiming to be from the hacker group and claiming they were about to target WBC in retaliation for planned picketing of the Arizona shootings. Anonymous said the letter was a hoax, and they had no plans that included WBC.

WBC, believing the letter was real, put out a flyer calling on Anonymous to “bring it.” (See flyer here)

So Anonymous did indeed bring it, defacing WBC’s Website during the great David Pakman’s live radio show, which that day included members from both groups. The hacker group went on to post personal information of WBC’s high ranking members, along with a map of the internal network of the church.



It seems as though Anonymous is back on the attack due to WBC’s attempt to insert themselves into this most recent national tragedy. While many Websites are reporting that the group has reposted the personal information of WBC members, Addicting Info has not been able to verify this. But the Anonymous Twitter feed did feature a message saying “Anonymous never forgets,” with the WBC “Bring It” flyer attached.

And, at the time of this writing, Anonymous Tweeted: “Called every comic book and costume store in the Newtown / Danbury, CT area, and they are all out of stock of Guy Fawkes masks. This is good.” (The ‘Guy Fawkes’ mask is the signature face of the Anonymous movement.) Looks as though Anonymous may be taking their online activism to the streets.

Anonymous most recently made the news by purportedly claiming credit for a successful hacking mission that led to glitches suffered by Project ORCA, a poll-monitoring system that was supposed to cinch the 2012 presidential election for Mitt Romney. (See coverage here.)

Currently, there is a White House Petition – with over 30,000 signatures in less than two days – calling for the administration to legally recognize the Westboro Baptist ‘Church’ as a hate group (as it has been already recognized by several organizations, including the Southern Poverty Law Center).

I don't like this "Church" a bit, but at what point do you lose your Constitutional rights simply because people don't like the message you may be spewing? I think this could become a very slippery slope if once started down.
