Post HELP! Locator pins or dowels fall out of the case...

Hi,

When opening the left hand side of the case to check on the shift lever, two small dowels or pins fell out. They are about 3/4in long and 1/8 in in diameter.

I assume they come from the engine or transmission. Does anyone know where they go? I assume it's not safe to run then engine without them.

The second skips really badly and it won't go higher than 3rd-gear, maybe it's all related?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Those are the shift pawl pins. They obviously fell out. They go under the shift pawl, which has a star like washer with ears on it to hold pins in. Without them it won't shift and stay in whatever gear its in, either second or third or fourth.

Yep, the second gear skipping will put excessive stress on the shift drum and the pins/washer, it will just happen again until the second gear problem is repaired.
