Ok, rebuilt carbs and petcocks over the winter. Tried to take my bride for a ride yesterday, first time fueled up this year. Our 35th anniversary.
1). Two right side carbs overflow badly while running. Not while turned off. Do not overflow when petcock is on prime while engine turned off. Float level? 2) Tank was leaking from underside also. Turned out to be crumbling fuel sender gasket. 3). While testing for tank leak, tested petcocks. One still leaks with engine off. I am thinking diaphragm with o-ring is not sealing. I rebuilt these during the winter following very detailed directions, including polishing the seats. Ideas? Any help with carb overflow problem or petcock drip problem? Very frustrated. Ready to move on to something fuel injected! thanks Art

Hi Padre,
This is the tutorial I used to rebuild the petcocks on my bikes as they were not sealing either. It's real important to resurface the castings and get them true. http://xjbikes.com/forums/threads/re...-w-pics.25058/ They all work well now. Hang in there you'll get it. ![]()

As for the flooding carbs, try tapping on the float bowls when they are filling, use a screwdriver handle or such. The floats can stick all the way down.

Hi - yes - I adjusted the drop tangs. I felt there was not enough float drop before and adjusted to give about 10 mm of float drop. Could not find a specification for float drop anywhere. Any ideas?

Make sure of two things!
1. The VENT LINE is open! a spider or bug can crawl in if it's just open. and the vent does not work anymore. This WILL make it flood. I worked on a '78 in like new condition about 10 years ago, and that was the cause of flooding. 2. Check the FLOAT BOWL GASKET. If they are not trimmed, the float can catch and hang on them, causing flooding. Good hunting, and try to start and/or ride it at least once a month. Let it warm up and it will keep most of the problems from showing up.

The best way
I've found to check the action of the drop tangs is before you put the bowls on just lift the carbs up and rock them front to back and watch to make sure the floats don't hang up on the posts. If the tangs aren't set right, the float will stick on the bottom of the post. The comments on trimming the bowl gaskets and making sure the fuel and vent t's are clear are also standard procedure for these carbs.

Thanks guys for good suggestions.
Found: vent tube in air box at least partly blocked. Float seat gasket egg shaped. Hoping for the best now for reassembly.
