Pilot Jet...salvage?
I had to work to get the #4 pilot jet out. But the others came out easily.
I used penetrating oil and an Easy-Out...clearly the PO had trouble too, as the screw slot was pretty shot. Might I be successful in reusing this one by sacrificing a few threads at the top and cutting a new screw slot with my Dremel? Or must I replace the jet? If so...do I replace just one or better to do all 4? The number 45 is clearly stamped just below the threads. http://flic.kr/p/bwmqet http://flic.kr/p/bwmq2F Thanks! Sure appreciate the experience of you folks... : ) 1979 XS11 |

If it was me, I probably would replace all 4, just make sure you order the BS30/96 type #45's. I wouldn't reuse the damaged one for sure. This supplier carries the correct type...

Given how much FUN it is to pull the carb banks, remove and replace the jets, then reinstall and connect the carb banks, do yourself a favor and REPLACE all those jets! They just don't cost much, the originals are 30+ years old and it is a PAIN to have to keep pulling the carbs because you where in a hurry or where a bit cheap the first time through. Trust me, there area LOT of people here on this forum that went through that route and now have new jets...

Replacing!
Thanks, all. Advice taken...I'll replace all 4 pilot jets.
I've not touched the main jets. Should I go after them, too while I'm here? So far, I've tried to not remove anything that will cause me to have to retune them when done (or better I learn how to do that with new pilot jets anyway?) If yes on the mains, please point me to good I instructions on pulling them. Many thanks! -Eric ; ) |

Gotta do the mains
They get really cruddy down in there.
Unscrew the main screw & then take out the mainjet nozzle. I usually turn the carb over, & with floats out tap bottom of main nozzle with 5mm socket to get it satrted. Once it starts moving I re-soak it with penetrating oil, & it comes right out the top. ![]()

Ordered...
Okay, I ordered pilot and main jets. I realize now that the main jets were in front of me and quite easy to unscrew...
Tha mains looked pretty clean, but it can't hurt to renew them. Thanks, all. Riding ahead! Next up...bracket for my Craigslist Windjammer IV to pick up next weekend! -EKPhys ; ) |
